Results 2016

We reached our cap of 100 runners this year.  With a few drop outs from last minute injuries, illnesses, and family issues, we had 89 runners toe the line on a misty Saturday morning.  Spirits were high as 7 waves of runners headed up towards Panther Mountain.  When the 2 lead runners, David Kilgore and Ben Nephew, came through 9.5 mile aid station almost together  and moving quickly, we knew a race was on.  The nature of this course is such that we don’t have easy access to miles 10-25 so information travels slowly.  Given the talent of the leaders we were hopeful for a competitive finish and maybe a new course record, so when the clock passed 4:32 we knew something was up.  A few minutes later Ben and David came down the road together to the finish chute, running but not racing.  At first I got a flashback  to the tie Hardrock 100 finish this past July, but then we saw the blood.  David had clipped a tree branch with his head and tore his scalp open, fully bloodying his face.  When Ben came across the blood trail and caught up to David, he stopped to help him with some trail first aid, using two hats for compression.  Once the bleeding was controlled they stayed together for the final 11(!) miles.  Even with the injury and the loss of  competition, they finished in a very speedy 4:41:31.  Jay Lemos came in 20 minutes later in 3rd place, over an hour faster than he ran last year.

While this stole the show, there were 87 other runners out there giving it their best.  Kehr Davis was the fastest of the women coming in 5th overall in 5:14:42.  With this victory, Kehr has won all 3 major Catskill Mountain trail races this year, with wins at the 54 mile Manitou’s Revenge in June and the 40th annual legendary Escarpment Trail Run in July.  Always steady Sheryl Wheeler was the second women through in 5:38:32 and Alanna Moss took 3rd “W” in 6:23:01.

Many runners came back from last year and dramatically improved their times, the largest improvement was made by Joe Limone running 1:15 faster!  Congratulations to all participants!
